Tornadoes can strike in any month, but areas of the country are at a bigger risk depending on the month.  Here is the breakdown by season.

Tornadoes are not limited to a specific season and have been documented in all 50 U.S. states. The highest frequency occurs from April to June, peaking in May, particularly in the central and southern plains, commonly known as Tornado Alley.

As the year progresses, the regions most at risk shift, with northern areas seeing more tornadoes in July and the deep South experiencing increased activity by November. Regardless of location or time of year, preparedness and having a safety plan are emphasized as essential.

Tornadoes Can Strike Year-Round, Especially In Certain Areas

Tornadoes can occur at any month throughout the year, and they've also been reported in all 50 states. As you can see, April, May, and June are the busiest months of the year, peaking in May, with roughly 260 tornadoes. In May, the central and southern plains are the most prone to tornadoes, from Texas to Iowa, which has been most commonly referred to as Tornado Alley. In July, much fewer tornadoes form. However, the focus shifts north, from Colorado, the northern plains, to the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and even Northeast are the most common places for tornadoes to form. By November, we typically see close to 50 tornadoes, and the risk area shifts southward. The hotspot for formation is across the deep south, from Texas to Alabama. Regardless of where tornadoes typically form, it's important to always be prepared, have a plan, and know what you and your family would do should a tornado strike.
