A one-year-old girl was fatally injured after being struck by a freight train while playing on the tracks in Barn Barn, Narrabri, New South Wales. Paramedics treated her at the scene, but she later died in hospital. 

Police confirmed the child was with other children at the time, and the parents were not in the immediate area but their whereabouts are known. The local community is supporting the family, and the train driver, who was not injured, underwent mandatory testing. Authorities are preparing a report for the coroner.

Chris, police have just provided an update on this tragedy which has devastated the town of Barn Barn in Narrabri. They say a one year old girl was playing on the tracks just before 8 o'clock last night when she was struck by a freight train. Paramedics treated the toddler at the scene for serious injuries but she later died in hospital. What we can establish at this stage is that the child was with a number of other children. The parents were not in the immediate vicinity but we are aware of where the parents were. This has been really really difficult for every single person in that community. When they awoke this morning to hear that news, our thoughts and condolences with the young family. The tight knit community is supporting the family of the little girl who was just shy of turning two. As for the 22 year old train driver, he wasn't injured but was taken to hospital for mandatory testing. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
