A horrific crash involving a car and a truck in Stoneleigh, west of Melbourne, has left a toddler and his parents dead. The boy's grandmother is the only survivor, but was hospitalised with serious injuries.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and has been discharged from hospital. Police have stated that there were no issues with signage or visibility at the intersection and are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Police say the early indications are it failed to stop at a stop sign. Driving on the intersecting road was a truck which couldn't avoid a deadly collision. The car rolled and was crushed, killing three of the four people inside, a three-year-old boy, his 41-year-old father who was driving and the 31-year-old mother. One of the passengers survived, the boy's grandmother. She was trapped. Once emergency services got her clear of the car, she was flown to hospital in Melbourne with serious injuries. She's in a stable condition. The driver of the truck was also taken to hospital with minor injuries. He's been discharged and is cooperating with police. This happened around 9.30 this morning in Stoneleigh, which is nearly two and a half hours west of Melbourne. The family members who were killed are from the Geelong area. Their deaths are sure to have a heartbreaking impact on the local community. We have seen far too many lives lost this year. Drive to the conditions, slow down, take your time. You would rather get there healthy, happy, enjoy the spring carnival period, enjoy the Christmas lead-in with your family, rather than having these death messages delivered to family and friends and the catastrophic ripple effect this has in the community, in schools, in families, in friendship groups. Ursula, police say there doesn't seem to be any issues with signage at the intersection and visibility is good. Their investigation is working through all the possible contributing factors that might have led to this catastrophic situation.
