A Paris court ruled that Sarkozy will remain under judicial supervision and is prohibited from leaving the country while his appeal is pending, which is expected to be reviewed early next year.

Sarkozy was acquitted on separate charges of corruption and illegal campaign financing. His imprisonment marked the first time a French president has been incarcerated since World War II. Before his release, Sarkozy described his time in jail as an extremely tough experience and a nightmare.

Well, we just saw a police escort pass by here leaving the jail. We believe Nicolas Sarkozy was in it. He has spent 20 days here at this prison in Paris. He is now free until his appeal is examined by a court early next year. Now, Sarkozy was sentenced in September to five years in jail. He was found guilty of criminal conspiracy for a case relating to illicit campaign funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Now, for Sarkozy, what it now means is he is free to be outside in the city. He can do as he pleases. However, there are some conditions because he is under judicial supervision, of course. So, for example, he cannot leave the country. The sight of Sarkozy in jail, of course, caused quite a stir here in France. It is the first time that a president has been behind bars since the Second World War. Just before his release, he spoke by a video conference from the jail.
