New data reveals that Italy is the largest consumer of electricity for air conditioning among EU member states, using over a third of the total electricity dedicated to cooling across the bloc. This high usage persists despite Italy having some of the highest electricity prices in Europe, a situation attributed to frequent heatwaves and an aging population.

Greece ranks second in air conditioning consumption, followed by France, Spain, and Germany. However, air conditioning represents only a small fraction of household electricity use in the EU, with the majority of energy going to room heating, water heating, and lighting.

Italy alone accounts for over a third of all electricity used for air conditioning across all 27 EU member states. Nearly 23,000 terajoules out of a total of just over 60,000. That's despite having some of the highest electricity prices in Europe, so why are Italians so hooked on A.C.? In recent years, the country has been hit by brutal heatwaves, with temperatures reaching 48 degrees in regions like Sicily or Sardinia. Add to that that the country is home to the oldest population in Europe and you get the full picture. Greece tells a similar story. Despite its smaller size, it ranks second in A.C. consumption in the EU, just over 8,000 terajoules, followed by France, Spain and Germany. But here's the twist. Air conditioning makes up just a tiny slice of household electricity use, accounting for only 0.6%. The lion's share goes to heating of rooms 62.5%, followed by water heating at 15% and lighting at 14.5%.
