The king later commuted that sentence to one year, and Thaksin served just six months before he was released on parole. He spent the entirety of his detention in the VIP wing of a hospital after complaining of heart trouble and chest pains, prompting widespread skepticism and public outrage. The judges on Tuesday said Thaksin had no severe illness and could have been treated in jail, adding that he and his doctors had intentionally prolonged his hospital stay. Paetong Tharn exited the courtroom alone, with Thaksin leaving separately in a Corrections Department vehicle, which shortly arrived at a Bangkok jail. In a statement on social media, Thaksin said that he accepted the verdict and would remain strong. He is Thailand's first former premier to be sent to prison, and the Supreme Court's ruling deals another major blow to a powerful family that has dominated Thai politics for two decades. Yet despite the jailing and the Sinawat family's waning influence, some experts think Thaksin will still attempt to call the shots in politics, and are doubtful whether he will spend the full year behind bars.
