Despite the ongoing negotiations, both sides continue to exchange fire and accuse each other of targeting civilian areas, reflecting the longstanding dispute over colonial-era border demarcation.

Defence officials from Thailand and Cambodia are discussing the resumption of a previous ceasefire brokered by Malaysia and the US at the Ban Pakad Palin checkpoint south of their shared 817-kilometre border. The decision to hold talks came on Monday following a meeting between ASEAN leaders in Kuala Lumpur, but the plan was off to a rocky start with disagreements over a neutral venue. Ahead of the meeting, Cambodia's defence ministry urged Thailand to cease all fighting. Cambodia urged that Thailand immediately stop all hostile activity and withdraw its force from Cambodia in territorial integrity and avoid acts of incursion and aggression that threaten peace and stability in the region as a whole. Cambodia is also reportedly pushing to include a formal border demarcation, a move which Thailand has rejected as a ceasefire remains its priority. Bangkok on its part is requesting an official halt to clashes monitored by observers and cooperation in demining conflict zones. The hostilities are part of the latest flare-up of a decades-old dispute over the colonial era demarcation of their shared border. Despite the peace talks, fire exchange is ongoing as the neighbours accuse each other of hitting civilian areas in provinces along the frontier.
