The fighting displaced approximately 300,000 people on both sides. The ceasefire was announced after a meeting between Cambodia's Prime Minister, Thailand's acting leader, and Malaysia's Prime Minister, who facilitated the agreement. 

The United States also played a role, with President Donald Trump warning both nations that trade deals would be withheld if hostilities continued. The imposition of tariffs on Thai and Cambodian goods may have contributed to the decision to halt the fighting. The ceasefire is seen as a crucial step toward restoring peace and enabling displaced people to return home.

Yes, Ursula, this will begin from midnight tonight local time and is being described as a vital first step in the de-escalation of this dispute. This is a centuries-long border conflict, but last Thursday it dramatically escalated with rockets being fired and at one point the Thai military launching airstrikes on Cambodian targets. Since then we've seen a number of running battles with around 300,000 people displaced on both sides of the conflict. Today Cambodia's PM and Thailand's acting leader met with Malaysia's PM who announced a ceasefire had been reached. This is a vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security. We hope that and I confidently believe that the result that we have today will provide a lot of opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people on both sides to return to normalcy and the stop of fighting between our two countries. Now Ursula, interestingly these leaders both mentioned Donald Trump's involvement in securing these ceasefire talks. The US President had warned both Thailand and Cambodia that he would not make trade deals with either nation if the fighting continued. Both Thailand and Cambodia were hit with huge tariffs on their goods during his Liberation Day announcement, so that may have made the difference.
