Shelling and armed clashes have erupted along the Thai-Cambodian border, with both countries accusing each other of initiating hostilities. The violence comes just weeks after a peace agreement was brokered by the United States and Malaysia, which has since faltered.

The renewed conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 40 people, including civilians, and has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes. Both governments claim to seek peace, but ongoing accusations and stalled negotiations have left the region tense and unstable.

The Cambodian side opened fire in many additional areas at dawn. Thailand has retaliated according to our response strategy, focusing on the military targets that launched the attacks on Thailand. The clashes are concentrated in these red-marked provinces, along a rugged highland corridor separating northeastern Thailand from northern Cambodia. It's a long contested area of dense jungle, ancient temple sites and still unclear demarcation lines. Cambodia maintains it has not breached the truce. Cambodia calls on the international community to strongly condemn the violation of the Cambodia-Thailand peace agreement and Thailand's repeated illegal actions, demanding that Thailand be held fully accountable for these flagrant violations. Cambodia calls on Thailand to immediately cease all hostilities that threaten peace and stability in the region. The renewed hostilities come only weeks after both sides signed a peace deal brokered by the United States and Malaysia. The agreement quickly faltered. Relations have deteriorated steadily this year, after two governments imposed retaliatory trade and travel restrictions. Escalation soon followed, culminating in July in clashes that killed more than 40 people, including civilians living near the frontier. This feud dates back more than a century. These photographs show French administrators who colonised Cambodia until 1953, when France withdrew, competing interpretations of its colonial-era maps left parts of the border undefined for people there. Since then, periodic skirmishes have erupted, often stoked by nationalist sentiment on both sides. This latest fighting has resulted in renewed displacement. Authorities in both countries say tens of thousands are fleeing villages near the conflict zone. I'm going to my relative's house. I heard many shots this morning and got scared. They were firing in many locations. But some families have no way out. So they have resorted to digging bunkers and building makeshift shelters. I want it to end. We villagers are ready. I don't want it to drag on. Both governments say they want to avoid wider confrontation. But with accusations mounting and negotiations stalled, the region continues to remain on edge.
