Look at you, comfy, got your shoes off. You're ready when simple things are hard to do. It can be frustrating for Ashley Velasquez. Take a little bit off the top. Keep your hair nice and clean up. That was taking her four year old son Julian to the barbershop to get a haircut. How was that? It was bad. I had to shave his head. Just to get it all out of the way. Just to get it. His his problem is he doesn't like hair on his ears. Julian has a speech delay with sensory sensitivity issues. So the buzzing of hair clippers and the snipping sound of scissors near his ears could trigger what every parent dreads in public, a meltdown. What would happen? Would he just run away? Mostly it was like kicking and scratching and yelling and screaming. At Morgan Salon in San Antonio, the haircuts are less stressful for Julian. The salon offers cuts, colors and even cuticle work for special customers who need a little more time and TLC to get things done. Did he even get a haircut the first time? He didn't get a haircut that same week when we came. Still didn't get a haircut. We got like a little neck trim. So it was like how she's doing right now, like getting the clippers so he's familiar with them. It helped. Salon manager Katrina Venzor Vargas says the customer's comfort level is as important as the haircut. I messed up your hair. There we go. Clients who don't like getting haircuts, we're going to meet you where you want to be met. If they want to cut their hair up there in the waiting area, if they want to walk around and we follow them while they get their haircut. We've even had them playing in the sink with the water while we do a haircut. The salon is the brainchild of retired businessman, philanthropist and father, Gordon Hartman. He draws his inspiration from his daughter, Morgan, who was born with cognitive and physical special needs. That's what we're all about here is inclusion. You can get a haircut here. I can get a haircut here and so can anyone else, even with acute special needs. It's for everybody. I guess you could say, oh, what happened, Don? But Hartman realized for parents of special needs kids, even accomplishing simple things like a trip to the barbershop can be hard. A little emotional like it's getting him to do like average things. It just means a lot. It's a haircut for him, but what is it for you? It's like I get excited when we do haircuts here because I know I'm not gonna, I know we're not gonna have a behavior. I know that it's gonna be a good day. For Julian, that means looking good. And for his mom, feeling good.
