Indonesia is experiencing its most significant unrest in over two decades, with police reporting several fatalities and more than 1,200 arrests. Protests were triggered by concerns over rising living costs and benefits granted to lawmakers.

Protests in Indonesia remain widespread as demonstrators demand reforms in response to lawmakers' pay and perceived lack of representation. The unrest has resulted in violence, including the burning of parliament buildings and police headquarters, and several deaths have been reported.

President Prabowo Subianto has promised to revoke some perks for lawmakers and ordered security forces to act firmly. Despite the deployment of soldiers and the closure of schools and universities in Jakarta, crowds continue to gather. The United Nations has urged Indonesian authorities to adhere to international standards on the use of force and called for an investigation into alleged human rights abuses.

Tensions sparked by lawmakers' pay remain high in Indonesia

Frustration is still ablaze among many in Indonesia, as rallies across the country continue to call for reforms. With several killed as the protests turned violent last week, a deep-rooted anger against police and lawmakers has taken hold. In recent days, protesters have set fire to regional parliament buildings and police headquarters and damaged infrastructure in several cities. President Prabowo Subianto responded to the unrest by promising to revoke some lawmakers' perks. He also ordered security forces to take firm action. On Monday, soldiers deployed throughout Jakarta, where schools and universities, stayed closed. But many people still gathered outside parliament. The biggest reform we need for parliament is for them to work for the people rather than for the party leaders or the parties themselves. That's what reform really means. No matter who you are, it doesn't matter. As long as you only work for your party, you're not working for the people. It's normal for the public to be angry because essentially there have been too many violations committed by the state. So many things done by the state, I would say, do not accommodate the people's aspirations, so they end up angry. The UN has urged Indonesian security forces to comply with international law on the use of force and firearms and is calling for an investigation into alleged human rights abuses.
