Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has urged the public to remain calm and assured that grievances will be addressed. The Jakarta police chief attended Kurniawan's funeral, expressing condolences and promising a professional investigation. The incident has added to widespread frustration over economic hardship and political issues, with tens of thousands participating in protests across the country.

Hours earlier, outside law enforcement headquarters, tensions were already high as police fired tear gas and crowds threw rocks. The demonstrators had gathered to demand accountability after the death of a motorcycle taxi driver, Afan Kurniawan. He was killed the previous day after being run over by a police vehicle during demonstrations that also turned violent. In a recorded video address, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for calm. In this situation, I call on the public to remain calm and to trust the government under my leadership. This government will do its best for our people. All public grievances will be heard and followed up. I also call on the entire Indonesian nation to stay vigilant against elements that are always trying to create chaos. On Thursday, outside the House of Representatives, protesters demanding an end to high payments to politicians, low wages and mass layoffs fought with police who attempted to disperse them. Political analysts say those issues and more are causing outrage in Indonesia, where tens of thousands of people, including students and workers, are protesting in Jakarta and other cities. What happened has been a culmination of months of not only economic but also political frustration all over the country. As you said before, we are in the middle of a worsening economy, collapsing job market, where thousands have been laid off. And instead of compassion, these people are continuously met with indifference and even sometimes tone-deaf and insulting responses. Hundreds of people gathered for Kurniawan's funeral. Among them was Jakarta's chief of police. On behalf of the police institution, we extend our deepest condolences. The victim's family has also asked us to take firm action and seek justice. Of course, we will act professionally and process the perpetrators involved in last night's incident. For many of the mourners, though, a palpable sense of sorrow and dismay. These drivers are also human, as well as commoners, as said by our lawmakers. We are very sad that one was hurt and we all felt it.
