Paramedics conducted a delicate hour-long operation to free the teen, who survived with only minor injuries and was released from hospital after an overnight stay.

The storm brought 33,000 lightning strikes and wind gusts up to 106 km/h, leading to flooding at the airport, power outages, and significant disruption across the region. Emergency services received 400 calls for help, with 500 SES volunteers responding overnight, as the community dealt with the aftermath of the fast-moving weather event.

There were scenes that had paramedics fearing the worst. The reports initially sounded quite grave from the bystanders that were stating that it looked unsurvivable. The 19-year-old had paused in traffic when the tree came tumbling down in Croydon Park, taking power lines with it. It was a pretty horrific accident because it was a massive big tree. The whole street was just basically red, blue and white. The young driver not only survived but escaped serious injury. To hear a voice coming from it was just incredibly heartwarming. Paramedic Scott McNamara held the teen's hand through a delicate 60-minute operation to cut her out. I was able to crawl in and reach through the centre console and I was only able to reach the young girl's arm. Any issues or mishaps could result in that tree just crushing that car further. The teen freed from the wreckage in good spirits. After an overnight stay in hospital, she returned to the scene today with her mother and brother. To think that such a significant random natural disaster of just such a large gum tree falling on a random car that we actually had an alive patient inside was just incredible. The road blocked off until this afternoon as crews worked to restore power, just some of the destruction caused by last night's short but powerful storm. Sydney and its surrounds hit by 33,000 lightning strikes, the highest wind gusts up to 106km an hour. 400 calls for help were made to the SES with 500 volunteers stood up overnight. The airport flooded, a tree held up train passengers in the Blue Mountains but the shire was the hardest hit. Rhonda was staying over when the tree ripped through her sister's home at Bangor. And then we heard this big bang and it wasn't thunder, it was the tree. With storm season well underway, the damage caused by last night's fast moving cell is a reminder of just how dangerous wild weather can be. Unpredictable and that's the biggest thing of it.
