Sydney observed Remembrance Day with ceremonies that honored the sacrifices made by Australian servicemen and women. The event included moments of silence, personal stories from veterans and their families, and expressions of gratitude from attendees of all ages.

Among those commemorated was Grace Wood, a 102-year-old former member of the Women's Land Army, and Jan McQuillan, who remembered her husband who served in Vietnam. Princess Anne also participated, laying a wreath at Brisbane's Gallipoli Barracks as part of her royal tour.

It's sad, really, to think that all those men have gone, but they're still in our minds. 102-year-old Grace Wood served in the Women's Land Army during the Second World War. She worked on farms as soldiers fought. It was a depressing time because the mothers used to ask their friends, have you heard from Tom? You know, and I'd say, no, not yet. Losses which still cut deep today. TRUMPET PLAYS Crowds of the senator falling silent to remember our servicemen and women, past and present. Nobody asked them to come and stand here, but they do. And that makes me feel reassured about the future of the country. Time may have passed, but the memories do not fade. And what means so much to veterans is seeing people of all ages here recognising the freedoms we all enjoy were hard fought. Young and old sharing their gratitude. For the people that died in the war, that sacrificed their lives. We must never become numb to the fact that behind each number is a person with a story, someone who was loved. Like Jan McQuillan's husband, Kerry, who served in Vietnam. He was too young. He was 62 when he passed away. And, um, a lot died a lot younger than that.
