President Ramaphosa has ordered clean-up efforts in Johannesburg's inner city ahead of the G8 summit, but survivors and advocates hope for lasting solutions rather than temporary measures.

If people are still living like this, I don't see any change. Tobe Kabiella, who acts as a police volunteer, explains how she was shot earlier this year as she was asleep in her home. She said she has just had gunshot and was hit by a bullet. I was shot while I was sleeping inside my house. Now I have an operation. Doctors, they didn't remove bullets inside from me. Every time when I'm walking, I have to buy pills because sometimes it's paining. It's not safe here. I really do blame government what is happening. According to South African lawyer Nomza Mozondo, it has been a struggle to get people out of so-called temporary emergency accommodation and a lasting change will take time. In that time, it's unlikely that much will be done, but our hope is that the process won't be abandoned after the G20. Our hope is that the treasury's commitment, the president's commitment to improving the Johannesburg inner city will outlive the G20 and hopefully ensure that there is dignified housing for the poor in the inner city and ensure that we don't have another Osiris. With South Africa due to host the G8 leaders' summit in November, President Ramaphosa has ordered the Johannesburg's inner city neighborhoods to be cleared up ahead of the gathering.
