A much-loved husband an father has been mauled to death by a shark while on a morning surf off Sydney's Northern Beaches. Fellow board riders tried desperately to save Mercury Psillakis' life, but his injuries were too severe.

A 57-year-old experienced surfer, Mercury Salakis, died after being attacked by a shark while surfing with friends at Dee Why Beach. Despite efforts from fellow surfers and emergency responders, he could not be saved due to severe injuries. The incident has deeply affected the local community, with authorities closing Dee Why Beach and monitoring the area for shark activity. This is only the second fatal shark attack along Sydney's coastline since the 1960s. Officials are analyzing recovered surfboard fragments to determine the type of shark involved, and residents have been urged to stay updated on beach closures.

A family embraced on the beach in shock after being told their loved one had been mauled by a shark. It was heartbreaking. I mean, I was home and then I saw it on the news, I came by and yeah, it was just heartbreaking. Yeah, it was a shock, goosebumps, don't know how to put all this out for the family. Mercury Salakis had been surfing with friends when he was viciously attacked around 10 o'clock this morning. The gentleman is an experienced surfer, he was there with a number of mates and yeah, it was at, he'd only been in the water for about half an hour at the time. He leaves behind a wife and a young daughter and obviously tomorrow being Father's Day, it's particularly critical and particularly tragic. Surfers pulled the 57-year-old's body out of the water and took him to shore, but he couldn't be saved, losing both legs and an arm in the attack. But unfortunately by that time, we understand he'd lost probably a lot of blood. Life savers and police quickly cleared the beach. Police boats, jet skis and planes spent the morning searching for the shark. I've got to say, it's a terrible, terrible thing and it's one of those freak incidents that happens very, very rarely. Obviously, there's a lot of people down at the beach at the time, it's a beautiful day here at D.Y. and so yeah, it's a great tragedy. The attack has rocked the tight-knit Northern Beaches community. Just shocking, shocked, upset, you know, disbelief. Everything's always a risk. If you're in the ocean, there's sharks, simple as that. So yeah, we always know there's a risk and that's a risk we accept. Our newly crowned world champion, Molly Picklem, left devastated at a homecoming event on the Central Coast today. Unfortunately, it's the reality of our sport and all my thoughts and prayers to that family and it's obviously a really tough situation and yeah, it's the risk you face. It's no lie that it's dangerous. This is the second fatal shark attack along Sydney's coastline since the 1960s. There were many surfers in the water at the time, with a junior competition happening close by. A shark net along D.Y. Beach had only been deployed five days ago. Two sections of the surfboard have been recovered and taken away for analysis to determine the type of shark involved. There is a sombre feeling here tonight at D.Y. Beach. The beach remains closed and will remain that way for the next 48 to 72 hours as authorities monitor for shark activity, with other beaches from Narrabeen to Manly likely to reopen later tomorrow. Northern Beaches Council has asked residents to stay up to date with the latest information on the beach closures via their website. The Premier has also issued a statement describing this as an awful tragedy and thanking the first responders and community members who tried to help in such tough and confronting circumstances. As for the shark attack victim's family, they are no doubt still trying to come to terms with this horrific tragedy.
