The Palisades and Eaton fires in the United States were the most costly, causing $60 billion in damages, while a series of cyclones and a typhoon in Southeast Asia and floods in China also contributed significantly to the total.

The report highlights the increasing role of climate change in driving the frequency and severity of these disasters. While progress is noted in the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy, the authors urge world leaders to enhance support for communities adapting to a changing climate.

Climate change is coming at a cost. According to a 2025 report from charity Christian Aid, the year's top 10 natural disasters equated to more than $120 billion in insured losses. At the top of the list was the Palisades and Eaton fires in January in the United States. More than 9,000 hectares burnt across Los Angeles, 31 people were directly killed and the economic cost was at least $60 billion. In late November, the year's second most expensive disaster hit. The combination of two cyclones and a typhoon wreaked havoc across Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. The damage to homes, railway lines, power grids, farmlands and other infrastructure is expected to cost at least $25 billion. Between June and August, torrential rains and flash flooding in China caused the third most costly disaster of the year. Streets turned to rivers, scores of people died and the devastation amounted to at least $11.7 billion in damages. Christian Aid's chief executive officer says climate change is fuelling these extreme events. The data continues to show that climate change is increasing both the likelihood and intensity of extreme weather events including floods, heatwaves and tropical cyclones. These events are causing widespread destruction and loss of life with the greatest impact falling on communities that have done least to cause the crisis. The report's authors are encouraged that the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is gathering pace. But they want to see world leaders do more to help communities adapt to a changing climate.
