Andy McDonald, 61, was wing foiling approximately 500 metres off Prevelly Beach in Western Australia when he was attacked and dragged underwater by what is believed to be a juvenile great white shark measuring up to 3.5 metres. McDonald fought back by punching and kicking the shark and was able to escape with the help of nearby surfers, who escorted him to safety.

Following the incident, authorities issued a shark warning for the Prevelly area, urging swimmers and surfers to exercise increased caution, although beaches remain open. Despite the close encounter, McDonald stated he intends to return to the water, expressing that he does not view sharks as a significant threat.

Andy McDonald was wing foiling around 500 metres off Preveley Beach just before six last night when he was thrown from his board and dragged underwater by what's believed to be a juvenile great white shark up to three and a half metres long. And actually dragged me down with my sail, with my board and I'm just like, oh, I'm in big trouble here. And then so I just kept punching it, kicking it. Nearby surfers heard Andy's cries and rushed to help. As he was paddling, he's looking at me not knowing what was wrong with me but he could see white chunks of foam coming up from underneath from the sea floor. A fellow rider escorted the 61-year-old to safety where he was greeted by shocked swimmers. He then returned home to tell his wife and daughter. I rang my wife on the way home and she was home and I said, I've just been attacked by a white pointer. And she's like, yeah, sure. And I'm like, no, no, I haven't. But she could hear it in my voice because I started getting quite emotional at that point. Authorities issued a shark warning for the Preveley area after yesterday's close encounter. And while the beaches have remained open, swimmers and surfers have been asked to use additional caution when entering the water. But yesterday's attack won't keep Andy McDonald out of the water for long. There's so many other things that can harm you. I don't think, you know, the sharks are a problem.
