These are the belongings left behind after Palestinian gunmen attacked a music festival in southern Israel. Piles of clothing was arranged on tables at a trauma center in the city of Caesarea for survivors to reclaim their lost objects or for families of the dead to reunite with the things their loved ones left behind. The open-air Nova music festival was just a few miles from the Gaza Strip when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israeli communities on October 7th. The gunmen killed 1,200 people, 260 of them at the festival. More than 240 others were captured and taken back to Gaza. Sarel Batavia survived. I was from the last people that were at the area of the festival. We ran away from the terrorists at the moment that they arrived to the festival. And I saw many stuff and many bags and many phones on the land at the moment that I ran away from the terrorists. My phone was there, my bags, my car, all my stuff, my laptop. And I know how much it's important. Alina Tovberg is another survivor. She told Reuters the sight of the victims' belongings, for her, called to mind another historical atrocity. A holocaust, she said, is how she felt. That's what she said she felt when looking at the piles of shoes and eyeglasses and keys. She called it, quote, simply a catastrophe, a catastrophe of terrorism, adding, it was real. I was there.
