Sun pillars, sometimes referred to as light pillars, are optical phenomena that can be observed when a bright light source, such as the sun, is low on the horizon. These effects typically occur at sunrise or sunset, or when another strong light source is present in the distance. 

The phenomenon is caused by the reflection of light from flat, plate-like ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, often within high, thin cirrus clouds. The reflected light creates the appearance of a vertical column or pillar of light extending above or below the light source.

Check out this photo of a pretty cool optical phenomenon that you may have seen yourself. It's called a sun pillar. Sometimes it's called a light pillar. And this occurs usually at sunrise or sunset or when there's a bright light source off in the distance. So, what's going on here? Well, it has to do with ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere, perhaps in some high thin cirrus clouds. The light source is actually being reflected off of the face of those plate-like crystals back to where we see it. And it gives the appearance of this pillar of light off in the distance.
