Written by Kasper Bajon, who conducted extensive research and interviews, 'Eweliusz' features significant digital effects, with about a thousand shots produced—over 60 of them digital. The production was primarily carried out in Poland, showcasing the growing competitiveness and technical capabilities of the Polish film industry.

Story of Poland's greatest maritime tragedy heads for Netflix debut

On the night of January 13th to the 14th, 1993, the Jan Eweliusz ferry set sail from the port of Szymonisze. However, no one could have predicted that the voyage would end in the largest peacetime maritime disaster in Polish history. The disaster shrouded in mystery, it became the subject of the new Netflix series, Eweliusz. A large part of this series is dedicated to this disaster and shows it. But also, an even larger part is about what happened next. It tells about people who were left on land, who lost loved ones, also about people who survived the disaster. It's not only a disaster film, but it's also a drama, a social drama, a court drama. Kasper Bajon, who is the author of the script, has reviewed dozens of acts, he has talked to many people who were affected by this disaster. So there is a lot of truth here. The scale of the number of shots, especially the shots of Eweliusz ferry sailing at night in a storm, were very difficult shots. I haven't seen a film with more than 60 digital shots. In the whole series, there were about a thousand shots in total, which required a variety of heavier or lighter special effects. So in this respect, it is definitely a unique series. I think we are going in a very good direction as Poland, because, at least we, from production to production, we make films or series that have more and more special effects, which, from the point of view of the degree of complication, is quite important for us. But also in general, in terms of quality, these productions are getting better and better, well realized and with increasing scope. 95% of this series was made in Poland, by Polish hands. It seems to me that the industry is absolutely competitive on a European or global scale. We don't have any complexes here.
