Workers United represents about 10,000 baristas at 550 stores, a small portion of Starbucks' 200,000 retail employees. If no agreement is reached, the strike could expand beyond the initial 25 cities as the holiday sales season begins.

To a showdown now brewing between Starbucks and thousands of union workers, they're threatening to go on strike one week from today on one of the coffee giant's busiest sales days of the whole year. Senior business and tech correspondent Julie Kent is here to show us what's at stake here. Uh-oh. Uh-oh, yeah, this is an important piece of the puzzle for your morning coffee. Unionized Starbucks baristas say they're ready to walk off the job on November 13th unless the company finalizes a new labor contract. And that date, no coincidence, it's Starbucks annual Red Cup Day, one of the biggest sales events of the year when those free reusable red cups are given away to customers. Now union leaders are calling this the Red Cup Rebellion and the union is asking for increased hours for employees and higher take-home pay. It says if Starbucks does not deliver a contract in the next week, the strike will start at coffee shops in 25 cities across the country with more joining in if no progress is made. Now in a statement to CBS News, Starbucks said the company is disappointed the union voted to authorize a strike instead of coming to the bargaining table. And in a CBS Mornings exclusive last week, CEO Brian Nickel told me that he is willing to negotiate but says the union's demands to date have been unreasonable. We already give them the best job in retail. We have the lowest turnover in the industry. It's below 50 percent. We also have the best benefits in the industry and we actually have the best wages in the industry. Workers United, which began organizing in stores back in 2021, represents roughly 10,000 baristas at 550 stores. We should point out that's a fraction of Starbucks' 200,000 retail employees. But if no agreement is reached, Starbucks could face picket lines just as those holiday season sales and that foot traffic are kicking off. Now CEO Mr. Nickel, I remember being very impressed watching the piece with him. He seems very confident about where he stands. Yeah, he's confident. He says that the union has left the table and Starbucks remains at the table and they want to continue negotiating. The union, of course, saying that they need to have some more terms met for their workers to feel satisfied to be on the job. Always two sides. One of those signs said it all. It said no contract, no coffee. Oh boy, so we'll see how it plays out. Yeah, we'll see how it plays out.
