With over two million acres burned across the European Union, researchers warn that such destructive episodes may become more common in the future.

Blazes were exacerbated by extreme heatwaves, a recurring issue across the continent as climate change intensifies. Senior forest fire risk researcher Javier Lamella sees underutilised land across Europe as leading to an accumulation of available fuel. Vegetation stress, greater fuel availability, extreme weather events, everything points in the same direction that these kinds of episodes will recur in the medium and long term in Europe. Meaning scorched landscapes and mountainsides covered in ash could become a more common sight across the continent.
