Cybersecurity experts emphasize the need for both technological and legal measures to address these challenges. Platforms like Sora 2 are implementing features such as watermarks, but experts recommend that individuals use detection applications on their devices and that vendors enforce stricter safeguards to help identify and prevent the spread of AI-generated fake content.

Ma'am, I stopped you for speeding. You were going 112. Sign back there said 112. That is highway 112, not the speed limit sign. I thought, oh gosh, this poor little lady. I felt bad for her. We were all laughing. It was shared all over social media. A lot of people thinking it was real. Nope. AI generated. It's fake. Just like these other videos you're seeing right here. People celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. Drone footage of a lighthouse on a cliff. That looked real. Nope. All fake. Deep fake videos, as they're called, getting more and more realistic, especially with OpenAI's new Sora app. There are some visual clues to help you decipher information because the worry is that we're going to have misinformation spreading. John Clay with cybersecurity company Trend Micro joins us this morning. John, thank you so much for being here. Yeah, Lauren, my pleasure. So I learned about this from my 11-year-old daughter because I shared on social media that cute little grandma getting pulled over, confused about the highway sign. And she's going through looking at my stuff and she goes, Mom, you know that's fake. It's Sora. And I was like, what are you talking about? I have no clue what you're talking about, 11-year-old. Yeah. And sure enough, she then starts to educate me about all these deep fake videos that are on there. And I thought, oh, my God, there's so many out there. And if you don't know what to look for, or some of them, even if you're trying to look, you might not even know, right? Yeah, unfortunately, the AI tech that has gotten so good at creating these synthetic media, whether it's audio, video, whatever it might be, an image even, they're getting so good now at being realistic that it's going to be very difficult for us humans to determine what's real and what isn't. Does that worry you? Because it worries me. Yeah, for sure. I mean, obviously, there's good uses of it, right? People can create these fun little videos and do things. Obviously, a lot of the influencers and TikTok folks, they're making revenue streams out of this. And one of the things AI can do is it can scale, right? So it can make massive amounts of numbers of videos for these creators. But there's also a dark side, right? The scammers out there can utilize this same technology to create realistic scams that people fall for. And unfortunately, we're starting to see a lot more of that. Well, and I mean, some of them are using images of celebrities. Yeah. And it's images of the celebrity doing something, and that celebrity was never doing that. So I think I have lots of questions here. I mean, first of all, legal issues. There's got to be, I mean, stuff happening. I'm sure there's lawsuits left and right, I would think. And then, I don't even know, how do you protect yourself? Yeah, all good questions, Lauren. Obviously, like OpenAI with Sora 2, what they're putting in place is that you have to agree that your likeness, your voice, your videos can be utilized out there in the public. If you don't agree with that, then obviously, anybody who uses your image or anything should be legally potentially arrested for doing that, right? So it is going to be, it's going to require the platform vendors, the AI vendors to come up and make sure that they put in safeguards. Sora 2, for example, puts a watermark in each of the videos, so that if I'm watching a video- It like pops up for just a couple seconds, and then it pops off. It's not law. Yeah, there could be a little better option there. So, you know, but again, this is where, what I try to preach to most people now is that because this stuff's getting so good, you're going to have to use technology to help you. You're going to use technology to detect these deep fakes. And the industry, the cybersecurity industry, has been massively funding research and development to put together new capabilities, new technology that can help with that. So most people out there probably need to start looking at putting an application on their mobile phones or their PCs in order to detect these things. Thank you so much for your insight.
