Unsealed documents reveal new details about the arrest of four Quebec men with military ties who are accused of stockpiling weapons for a violent invasion to seize land and create an extremist enclave in Canada.

Canadian authorities have charged four men, including two serving members and one former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, with terrorism-related offenses after an investigation into an alleged extremist plot near Quebec City. The RCMP alleges the group, led by Marc-Aurel Chabot, engaged in paramilitary training and plotted to violently seize land, referencing the 1993 Waco siege in the United States.

The investigation began with surveillance of an Instagram account and expanded to include phone taps, GPS tracking, and monitoring of financial activities. A large cache of weapons and ammunition was seized, and the accused are currently detained awaiting trial, except for one who was released on bail. The allegations have not yet been tested in court.

Heavily armed, fully equipped in military gear, this just one of many training sessions of an anti-government group the RCMP says was plotting to violently take over land near Quebec City. Now unsealed, RCMP documents reveal the investigation began in March 2023 looking into an Instagram account. But it quickly grew. Four men were put under intense surveillance. Marc-Aurel Chabot and Matthew Forbes, both serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Simon Anger-O'Day, a former member, and Raphael Lagasse, a civilian instructor. The RCMP alleges Chabot was the de facto leader of a group of extremists. It would seem to be antithetical to their role in the military where the intent is to defend the country, protect the country. They think they are defending the country. They think they're defending it from the problems that have beset it for the past decade or so. Appearing under a pseudonym in a now-deleted podcast episode, the RCMP alleges Chabot said this, you need to be reliant on yourselves, have a community that backs you. So whatever the F the governments try to pull, try coming after dudes that are prepared, are tight, run their shit well. You can't. It's going to be another Waco. He's referring to the 1993 siege in Waco, Texas after a 51-day standoff between federal agents and the Branch Davidian cult. More than 80 people were killed. In Quebec, the RCMP soon tapped the men's cell phones, put GPS trackers on their vehicles, and monitored both their mail deliveries and banking. Training sessions were also recorded. Aerial shots show unidentified individuals fully kitted in gear using handguns, long guns with illegal magazines and smoke grenades. I think the big question is, who are those other people? Are they also military? Do they have some connections to military, you know, either as active or former serving members? Some of those sessions happened here, at a quarry outside of Quebec City owned by Lagasse's family. In one session infiltrated by officers, the RCMP alleges they learned how to slit throats and shoot people in the head. Now, none of these allegations have been tested in the courts. Sarah, as I understand it, all this information comes from documents the RCMP filed to get the search warrants and what they turned up certainly made headlines. Yeah, they moved in in January 2024 and really it was a massive cache of weapons. We're talking 83 firearms, at least 11,000 rounds of ammunition and more. The men were arrested in July. Anger, Odé, Chabot and Lagasse are being detained until their trial. Forbes was released on bail. All right, thank you, Sarah. That's Sarah Leavitt in Montreal.
