In Ghana, many vulnerable children face daily challenges in accessing basic needs, education, and personal development opportunities. Now, local humanitarian organizations — supported by international partners — are introducing sleepaway camps as safe, nurturing spaces where these children can learn, grow, and dream.

In Chorkor, a deprived community in Accra, Ghana, many children face limited access to education and opportunities. Basics International, a local organization, has launched free Sleep Away Camps to help address these challenges. The camps, held during school holidays at Camp Akloa near Esoteri, offer children aged 5 to 17 the chance to learn reading, ICT, and leadership skills, as well as participate in sports, music, and dance.

The initiative also emphasizes environmental education, teaching children about ecology, sustainability, and green living. Founder Wilkins, drawing from personal experience, aims to inspire children to broaden their horizons and envision new possibilities for their futures. The program seeks to empower participants with skills and values that can benefit them throughout their lives.

Sleepaway camps offer hope to Ghana's vulnerable children

Many children in Choko, one of Ghana's deprived communities, are from vulnerable homes. They lack consistent care and have limited exposure to new skills, education and life-changing opportunities. So, local organization Basics International is pioneering a unique initiative, Sleep Away Camps, designed to immerse children in nature and holistic learning experiences. It is for free. You know, we work in a fishing community, so children tend to be children of fisher folk, and they only know, and now they're coming out to farmland. But they're coming out to, you know, bigger than agriculture. They're just learning about nature and mountains and just beauty. Founder Wilkins speaks from personal experience. I was given opportunity. I had a teacher that cared, that taught me about tunnel vision. I had a sleep away camp. I had people, you know, whether we want to call them angels or we want to call them whatever it is, and that's just what I feel that I'm giving the children. Open during school holidays, these vulnerable kids between the ages of 5 and 17 get to stay at Camp Akloa near Esoteri. They are mentored and learn how to read, acquire ICT and leadership skills, and take part in sporting games, music, and dance. Children also develop a deeper understanding of ecology, sustainability, and green living, skills and values they can carry into adulthood. I think we'll be pointing the way to, you know, change our realities, to change our sense of what's possible here in Ghana by creating this space.
