A 48-year-old skipper escaped unharmed after his motorcruiser was destroyed on rocks off Kingscliff, NSW. Authorities are investigating the cause as crews work to remove the stranded vessel.

A motorcruiser was severely damaged after running aground on rocks near Kingscliff, New South Wales. The vessel's bow was torn off and the boat largely disintegrated, leaving only the cabin intact. The 48-year-old skipper, who had departed from Ballina and was headed for Southport, managed to escape by swimming to shore with an oar after the boat struck rocks in the dark.

Local council crews attempted to remove the stranded houseboat but were unsuccessful, deciding to wait for low tide to dismantle and remove the vessel. Debris from the wreck has washed up along at least a kilometre of beach. The cause of the incident is currently being investigated by New South Wales Maritime authorities.

So here we are and it's pretty amazing. And this is the man who somehow escaped as his boat fell apart at sea. Still with a paddle at a Kingscliff pub late last night with an incredible story to tell. Ended up finding out that he swam because his boat hit a rock and he just took his oar and off he went. The 48-year-old skipper left Ballina early yesterday, headed for Southport. His boat passed Lennox Head mid-morning and routed Cape Byron, then into the bay. In the afternoon, at the surf break known as The Wreck, the future wreck paused. Its skipper was spotted on deck. Then hours later and in darkness, after just 80 kilometres, his boat was splintered on rocks. 11 o'clock at night going in this weather, scary. We don't know exactly how it got wrecked. That's been investigated by New South Wales Maritime. The houseboat has been stranded in the sand all day. Council crews have tried digging it up. But after several failed attempts, they've decided to wait until tomorrow morning's low tide to dismantle the vessel and remove it. There's been debris washed for at least a kilometre down the beach. It doesn't happen every day for me in my job, that's for sure. Hannah Watt, 10 News.
