Tornadic risks are back in the Dakotas and Minnesota, with days of storms expected ahead.

Thunderstorms have moved through parts of Minnesota, with a tornado warning issued for areas near Lyon County, north of Marshall. The storms have shown rotation and produced significant lightning, with the risk of severe weather extending into eastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota, and central and northern Minnesota. 

Large hail and damaging winds are highlighted as the main threats, though isolated tornadoes remain possible. The forecast indicates continued storm activity across the Upper Midwest, including South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin, with additional severe weather expected in the coming days alongside rising temperatures farther south.

Severe storms return to the Upper Midwest

We're tracking some thunderstorms moving through some parts of Minnesota and some less active weather. We showed you the view there from Waterloo, and we've got some showers around, but they're not terribly heavy there, impacting the road surface too much. Again, Duluth kind of splitting the uprights. We want to take the satellite off and just focus on the radar aspect of that view. And you can see that really well, most of us are facing only some showers, if any precipitation at all. There's a pocket of southwest Minnesota where there is some pretty intense weather. A lot of lightning out here with this cell, and you can see we're in the area near Lyon County, in Lyon County, the northern end of the county, north of Marshall, Minnesota. Relatively big point of reference there, Marshall, Minnesota. Areas around Ghent and immediately east and northeast of Ghent, we are under a tornado warning as we're tracking an area of rotation within this cell, a rotating thunderstorm drifting slowly south, almost directly south. These storms have been moving almost aimlessly here, but the inflow feeding into the base of the storm helping to lead this storm to drift a little farther south. You can see earlier, a severe cell pulled northeast. This one's hooking it almost directly south now, north of Marshall, Minnesota. Minneapolis, a couple of showers off to the east, now crossing the river into western Wisconsin, but the risk for severe storms is still present tonight into eastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota, and a good chunk of central and northern Minnesota. Yes, there is the risk for an isolated tornado, but large hail and damaging wind will be the bigger concerns among these storms. There's some risk for severe storms tonight. Tomorrow, big green zone from the Black Hills all the way into western parts of northern Michigan. So thunderstorms will be out there for some, but it's going to be pretty hot farther south. The heat will build. So future radar. Well, let's press pause here on Friday afternoon, 4 p.m. Thunderstorms in Duluth. This is going to be problematic here from Lake Country, Millilocks all the way east into Duluth and then scattered storms in the northern parts of Iowa. Sioux Falls, scattered thunderstorms will be around as well. And these are going to be pretty heavy into northern Wisconsin and the upper part of Michigan into Friday night. So there's a risk of severe storms here. But then a new episode breaks out from the Black Hills into the northern Plains. And again, the traffic is very, very active here. Look at that expanding and running across the ridge on the north side of the ridge through Minneapolis into Saturday with more storms firing up southern Minnesota, northern Iowa, still South Dakota day after day with strong thunderstorms. So Saturday's forecast as we kick off the weekend, we have a storm zone here from Scotts Bluff to Rapid City to Bismarck, Fargo, Watertown, Minneapolis, and Duluth. The lightning bolts continue east here at a Green Bay in Sioux St. Marie. Farther south, the heat is on. Look at North Platte at 98 degrees, 98 in St. Louis. We're forecasting 100 in Sunday's forecast for St. Louis. But again, storminess here and there, Friday and Saturday.
