Meteorologist and storm chaser Tony Laubach has reported an increased threat of severe storms across Nebraska, particularly along the Interstate 80 corridor from North Platte to Lincoln. The primary concern is damaging winds, with gusts potentially reaching up to 80 miles per hour, and a risk of large hail and isolated tornadoes during an early window as storms develop.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings have been issued for the region, including Cherry and Grant Counties, with meteorologists advising residents to remain alert. The storms are expected to intensify and move southeast, affecting major population centers and prompting calls for heightened weather awareness.

Severe storm threat returning to the Plains

We're joined now by Accuweather meteorologist and storm chaser, Tony Laubach. Tony, it looks pretty nice behind you, but I know you're watching for some of these storms. Yeah, and I think the scene is gonna start to change pretty quickly here. You mentioned those threats, the damaging winds, gonna be the primary factor, but there's gonna be an early window, I think, as we see a couple of isolated storms develop on the front here to the north of North Platte, Nebraska, where we could see some large hail, and yes, even a tornado or two. But right now, the main threat is going to be those damaging winds, especially as we get later into the evening. How late are you talking? We're talking 11 o'clock at least. We'll show you the severe thunderstorm watch. This has just gone up. You notice we've got two watches on the board, one way up north in Minnesota, and then the one here in Nebraska, that one is the one that I'm gonna be covering here this evening, that going to 11 o'clock. Again, the primary risks with that are going to be damaging winds. We could see wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour, and maybe some hail with those storms as well. Again, that early threat for hail and that isolated tornado threat, that's gonna be a short window, maybe an hour or two before that complex of storms really gets going and starts pushing to the southeast. This will affect areas along Interstate 80, basically from North Platte east over toward Grand Island. York may be as far east as the Lincoln, Nebraska area, so a lot of major population centers along Interstate 80 gonna be on the threat for those damaging winds later on this evening. We're gonna see those storms fire about an hour or so north of I-80. They're gonna be slow moving at first, but then as that front starts to work its way south, we'll see that complex of storms really get together. Might see a bowing segment. Typically, that means you get that bow echo, that push of strong winds. That would be the threat, the primary threat this evening. Again, could be looking at wind gusts between 60 and 80 miles per hour. So folks, along the I-80 corridor, again, between North Platte, Nebraska, east toward Lincoln, certainly be weather aware tonight. Could be very, very stormy till later this evening. All right, so let's go and see what else is going on across parts of the Northern Plains, including our first tornado-warned storm that we are tracking for the region. You can see here for Cherry County, Nebraska, we have our very first severe thunderstorm warning that we're gonna be watching out for, but also wanna point out that storm that's off to the south and to the southwest. Once again, all the storms that we are tracking across the Northern Plains, they have all those rich inflow winds working their way into the actual storm. So all the storms we're watching out here across parts of the Northern Plains, especially that we're gonna be watching out for the potential of tornadoes to increase. So Grant County, even though you're only under a severe thunderstorm warning, not a tornado warning, you need to treat this as a tornado-warned storm because this storm is definitely gonna be capable of producing a tornado as well.
