A group of seniors at the Westminster Oaks Retirement Community in Tallahassee are protesting Florida's mandate to remove colorful crosswalks. The residents, who spent years securing approvals for the crosswalk, argue that the colors were intended to enhance safety for both seniors and nearby schoolchildren, not to make a political statement.

State officials, including Governor Ron DeSantis, have ordered the removal of all non-standard crosswalks, citing concerns that colored pavement distracts drivers. The directive has led to the erasure of various themed crosswalks across the state, including those commemorating the Pulse nightclub shooting and supporting law enforcement. Seniors at Westminster Oaks dispute the state's safety concerns, noting a lack of evidence, and warn that funding is at risk if municipalities do not comply.

Florida's crackdown on colorful crosswalks has gotten in the crosshairs of seniors at the Westminster Oaks Retirement Community in Tallahassee. We are all angry. 85-year-old Nancy Fisher laid on the ground to keep workers from erasing the colors on their crosswalk. I laid down on the crosswalk, spread eagle, and there was a woman behind me making sure the cars didn't run over me. It took three years of studies and obtaining city, county, and state approval to get it done. The crosswalk is located on a major artery. It had no political messaging. It was meant to keep seniors and kids safe when they cross the road. It's not a political statement. It's a safety issue. Westminster Oaks resident Jane Hudson worked with the Crosswalks to Classrooms initiative which helped in the development because there is a school nearby. They erased the crosswalks and students painted them. We created this colorful enhancement for our residents as well as for our students here at the at the elementary school. But state officials say colors on pavement are distracting to drivers. They've ordered all municipalities to remove them. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. We're not doing the the commandeering of the roads to put up messaging. Across the state from Tallahassee to Key West there's been pushback. In Orlando a rainbow crosswalk meant to honor the 49 victims killed in the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting targeting the LGBTQ community was erased. State troopers had to be stationed to keep community members from recoloring the crosswalk. Also in the process of being erased this back the blue crosswalk outside Tampa's police headquarters. Back at Westminster Oaks the seniors say their removals are not about safety. There is nothing to substantiate that opinion.
