Hegseth, nominated by former President Donald Trump, previously worked as a television personality and is a former Army Reserve officer with a degree from Princeton. His nomination comes with controversy, as numerous issues are expected to be raised during the hearing.

Concerns regarding Hegseth's fitness for the role include allegations of a sexual assault from 2017, an email from his mother accusing him of womanizing, financial mismanagement allegations involving two veterans charities he managed, and accusations from colleagues at Fox News about drinking while on the job. Hegseth has sought to dispel these allegations through meetings with senators on Capitol Hill.

Hegseth remains optimistic about his confirmation prospects, although his position is precarious given that he would be serving under a leadership known for significant turnover in the defense secretary role. The previous administration replaced five defense secretaries during a four-year term. The decision of whether Hegseth will be confirmed now lies with the Senate.

In recent weeks, Hexeth has launched a charm offensive on Capitol Hill, attempting to convince senators there's no basis to any of the allegations. Senators who'll decide are somewhat more guarded. Hexeth himself is confident he'll be confirmed, saying the message from senators he met were consistent. Even if Hexeth is confirmed, job security is not a given.
