In South Africa, high rent prices and rising unemployment have left many with nowhere to live, but one group is trying to make a change.

In Cape Town, South Africa, many residents face prolonged waits for government housing, with some living in makeshift and unsafe shacks for decades. An organisation called Shack Builders is addressing this issue by constructing improved, insulated homes for those in need, focusing on informal settlements.

Shack Builders, led by research psychologist Quinten Adams, has built over 120 homes in eight years and also provides construction skills training to local youth. The initiative is funded mainly by private companies, with beneficiaries identified through community leaders, offering a practical solution to South Africa's significant housing backlog.

Natalie Walton's been on a government waiting list for a home for 25 years. In that time she's lived in this makeshift shack in West Bank outside of Cape Town. She shows us how it's falling apart and how unsafe it is and says it often makes her and her family sick. We put this board here for the cold. Just for the cold, but the wind is still coming in here. The wind is still coming in. And here also is a lot of places that is leaking. So it's very cold. But there's now a chance to start over. A new home is being built for her by an organisation called Shack Builders. Over eight years it's built more than 120 homes, mostly in informal settlements. These shacks are built with higher roofs and windows for better ventilation. It's also insulated. What people normally do, they will just put maybe just this normal sand and a mat. And even when you enter a shack like that, you can even get the smell. You can feel the coldness inside. But the way we do it, it's lovable for people. The small team is made up of mostly young men from local communities and aims to teach them construction skills. South Africa has a construction backlog of more than two million homes. The government's struggling to keep up because of a lack of money and the scale of demand. Projects like Shack Builders are stepping in to help people one home at a time. Leading it is Quinten Adams, a research psychologist who aims to combat what he says are inhumane living conditions. He says Shack Builders provides real and practical solutions for people living in substandard homes. Most of the people are experiencing dehumanisation. They feel less human. They feel that they are on the bottom of the economic pyramid. And then we come and we build them a structure. And then that's why we say it's the beginning or the process of the restoration of human dignity. It costs about $1,300 to build one home. Most of the money comes from a private company.
