Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has elected Sanae Takahashi as its new leader, setting her on course to become the country's first female prime minister. Takahashi, known for her conservative views and pro-business stance, has pledged to address Japan's economic challenges and is expected to pursue increased government spending.

Takahashi is recognized for her hawkish positions on defense and foreign policy, including support for revising Japan's pacifist constitution and strengthening military capabilities. She has also expressed opposition to same-sex marriage and changes to traditional family naming conventions. Her confirmation as prime minister awaits a parliamentary vote, after which she is expected to engage in high-level diplomatic meetings.

All right, over the weekend, Japan's embattled, ruling Liberal Democratic Party elected Sanae Takahashi as its new leader, putting the conservative candidate on course to become the country's first female prime minister. For more on this, let's bring in CBS News foreign correspondent, Rami Adelsencio from our London bureau. Rami, other folks like myself will be getting used to saying her name now that she will be more well-known, but what can you tell us about her and the reaction to her possible new role? Absolutely, definitely remember this name, Sanae Takahashi, this is momentous for Japan, also fascinating, I have to say, Errol, considering that the country, Japan, ranks quite poorly, actually, when it comes to gender equality. You basically have to look to Africa or the Mideast to find worse, but Takahashi appears to be saying the right things and boasting the right creds for her party. One is economically, Japan has got growth and inflation issues, like a lot of countries. She is super pro-business and wants to unleash government spending, and Japanese stocks, we saw today, hit a record, up nearly 5%. Politically, she is an ultra-conservative. She's actually one of the most conservative in her party, in fact. She also idolizes someone on this side of the world, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, aka the Iron Lady, and she is known as Japan's Iron Lady herself. Her hawkishness also flies through many other areas. The military, through the South China Sea, and also at home in culture. She supports revising Japan's pacifist constitution from World War II. That would empower the Japanese military more, and it will anger Beijing. She supports pushing back against China in the South China Sea. She's talked about diversifying from Chinese tech. She even visited Taiwan earlier this year. And culturally, she's also opposed same-sex marriage and has also opposed women keeping their maiden names after they get married. We're now looking ahead to mid this month. There will be a vote in Parliament to confirm her. Then, after that, a bit of a baptism by fire. She might meet, she may meet President Trump in Japan at the end of this month. It looks like that is going to happen. We should expect her to reaffirm security ties, and she may try to redo a tariff deal with him, of course, without getting on his bad side. But one thing, if she is confirmed, Errol, then there's only one G7 country left that will not have had a woman head of state. You can probably guess it, and that is the United States. Remarkable. And so much on her political plate, Takeichi, a name to remember. Remy, great to see you. Thanks so much.
