Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site, has suffered damage to its eastern facade following a Russian airstrike. The cathedral, built over a thousand years ago under the rule of Yaroslav the Wise to rival Constantinople's Hagia Sophia, is considered a masterpiece of Kievan Rus architecture and holds significant cultural value for Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.

Due to the ongoing conflict, UNESCO has placed Saint Sophia and two other Ukrainian sites on its World Heritage in Danger list. Restoration work is planned but cannot begin immediately. Seismic sensors will be installed to monitor vibrations from future attacks, as concerns grow for the preservation of this important historical monument.

Ambitions for St. Sophia were lofty from the start. When work began just over a thousand years ago, Kiev's ruler, Yaroslav the Wise, wanted his cathedral to be the rival of its mighty namesake in Constantinople, the Hagia Sophia, then the largest cathedral in all of Christendom. Even bringing architects from Constantinople, Yaroslav's project never rivaled its Byzantine inspiration for size, but no matter. A masterpiece of human creative genius. That's what UNESCO has called St. Sophia and the monastic buildings of Kiev-Pechersk-Lavra. But it's very worried about them. In June, a Russian airstrike damaged the cathedral's eastern facade. We saw that a part of the main apse fell off. You know that the cathedral is more than a thousand years old, so of course the construction was not able to withstand the blast waves. There will be repair and restoration work, but this is not today and not tomorrow. Because of the war, UNESCO has put this and two other Ukrainian sites on a World Heritage in Danger list. Seismic sensors will be installed on the walls, so it will be easier for us to monitor the vibration waves, any type of vibration waves, including the waves from air attacks. St. Sophia is one of the finest artistic expressions of Kievan Rus, that medieval fusing of Viking and Slavic peoples that became the mother culture for modern Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.
