Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders have expressed skepticism, warning that Russia may be using the talks as a stalling tactic amid intensified attacks on Ukraine. U.S. News Chief White House Correspondent Nancy Cordes joins us now from Anchorage, Alaska. I think, let's see, what is it, 3.30 in the morning where you are, Nancy, good morning to you. What should everyone's expectations be heading into this summit, considering everything we've just laid out? Well, President Trump seems to be adjusting expectations to some degree, Errol. Initially he was saying that he was going to be hashing out land swaps, trading territory, Ukrainian territory with Putin, and that really alarmed many European leaders and Ukrainian leaders who said, you know, those kinds of details should not get worked out without Ukraine at the table. And it appears that President Trump heard those concerns. He's now describing these meetings tomorrow as more of a listening session for him to get a sense of whether Putin is truly serious about wanting peace. And we're getting some new details from the Kremlin this morning about how these meetings are going to go down. They say that Trump and Putin are going to meet one-on-one first, just with their translators present, and then the meetings will broaden out to include their top advisers. And the Kremlin is also saying that Putin is going to join Trump for a press conference after the meetings have wrapped up. So it'll be a rare opportunity for Western journalists to be able to ask him about his three-year invasion of his neighboring country, Ukraine. And Nancy, it's fascinating to hear the president say he just wants to hear Putin out, because European allies and Zelensky specifically have warned that Putin cannot be trusted based on previous conversations. And this year, we've watched over the past few weeks, as President Trump's rhetoric toward Putin has worsened. He says they have, in his words, great conversations, followed by more intense bombing of Ukraine by Russia. So what is Russia's motive here? Right. Zelensky says he told President Trump yesterday, flat out, that Russia is bluffing, that this is a stalling tactic. And I interviewed Andrea Kendall Taylor yesterday. She is a former U.S. intelligence official who specialized in Russia. And she said that this is most likely a ploy by Putin to try to buy more time as he intensifies his attacks on eastern Ukraine and on major Ukrainian cities. Take a listen to what she had to say. I think Putin in this summit is really, you know, dangling the prospect of ending the war or some sort of ceasefire to try to keep President Trump on side, and in doing so, buy more time for the prosecution of his war and to wiggle out from any U.S. pressure that President Trump might consider imposing. She added, Errol, that Putin may be alarmed by some of the tougher talk that you mentioned coming from President Trump, threatening more sanctions, threatening more tariffs, and that that may be the reason that he is suddenly pushing for talks with Trump now.
