Myanmar's recent election has drawn criticism for excluding Rohingya refugees, who remain stateless and stranded in Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh. Over 1.3 million Rohingya, denied citizenship and voting rights under Myanmar's laws, continue to face harsh conditions in refugee camps as aid dwindles and essential services are stretched.

Rohingya leaders in exile view the election as another denial of their rights and identity, while ongoing conflict in Rakhine state has forced more to flee. Many refugees, including those born in exile, express little hope for change, remaining without rights or the prospect of returning home.

Rohingya refugees excluded from Myanmar election

The repercussions of Myanmar's controversial election extend far beyond its borders. In Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh, more than 1.3 million Rohingya refugees who fled past military crackdowns remain stranded, having been denied ownership of land, voting rights and citizenship under Myanmar's nationality laws. For Rohingya leaders in exile, the vote is another rejection of their desire to belong. Most of the people of Myanmar have stayed away from what they see as a sham election. This is not a free, fair or inclusive vote. Once again, the Rohingya people have been completely erased, denied even the right to exist in this election. Intensifying conflict between the junta and ethnic armies in Rakhine state since late 2023 has forced more people to flee here to Bangladesh. Kabir and his wife managed to escape, having been forced to leave behind their three young children, parents and other family members. We took part in the 2010 election with hope, but nothing was done for us. Rohingya Muslims who are still there and are living in unbearable conditions, abused by both the Rakhine army and Myanmar government forces. Here in the world's largest refugee camp, life is going harsher. Aid is cut, rations are smaller and essential services are stretched thin, leaving families struggling to survive with the hope of ever returning home fading. At 87, Nur Hussein has lived through decades of change. He voted once at the age of 50 and again at 70. Now that feels like a distant dream. This election won't be fair. It will be rigged. When I was a child, we lived in peace in Myanmar. We had homes, neighbors and hope, but discrimination increased. In the end, we had no choice but to flee to survive. For most Rohingya refugees and the many here born in exile, the election offers no hope, no rights and no peace. They remain stateless, longing to return to the land they once called home.
