A new report reveals over five million children across Europe face sexual abuse, both online and offline, as lawmakers remain divided over the EU’s proposed “chat control” bill.

A recent report has revealed that child sexual abuse remains a significant issue across Europe, with approximately 1 in 15 children having experienced rape or sexual assault. The study, covering 33 countries, found that 4.7% of children reported being raped and 7.4% reported being sexually assaulted before the age of 18, with girls facing a higher risk than boys. 

Family members were identified as perpetrators in 7.6% of cases, and child helplines received over 33,000 calls related to sexual exploitation and abuse in the past year. The report also highlights the increasing prevalence of online abuse, with 1 in 5 children exposed to unwanted sexual content and 1 in 7 experiencing pressured sexual interactions online. The Netherlands was noted as the leading country for reports of child sexual abuse material, followed by Slovakia and Lithuania.

A new report exposes the grim numbers of child sexual abuse in Europe. Around 1 in 15 children in Europe has been a victim of rape or sexual assault, according to a Child Light study on 33 countries. 4.7% report experiencing rape before the age of 18, and 7.4% being sexually assaulted. The rate is significantly higher among girls than among boys. Violence often occurs within the family. 7.6% of children said they experienced sexual assault by a family member before turning 18. In 2023, child helplines reported over 33,000 calls related to child sexual exploitation and abuse. This phenomenon is also becoming increasingly significant online. Amid an astonishing global rise in AI-generated abuse, around 1 in 5 European children was exposed to unwanted sexual content in the past year. Also, 1 in 7 children reported unwanted or pressured sexual interactions over the same period. Netherlands-hosted web platforms accounted for a staggering 60% of reports against child sexual abuse material. The country also has the highest rate of reports per 10,000 people, followed by Slovakia and Lithuania.

Israel is still limiting the number of aid trucks allowed to enter Gaza nearly a week after a ceasefire deal was agreed. It’s told the United Nations will only allow 300 per day - that's half the minimum number agreed under the truce.
The UN says even 600 trucks entering daily would not be enough to meet the needs of the population.
