The U.S. is remembering Hurricane Katrina, which devastated parts of the South 20 years ago. CBS News' Rob Marciano reports.

Residents of Biloxi, Mississippi, are reflecting on the impact of Hurricane Katrina, which remains the costliest natural disaster in American history. While New Orleans received much of the national attention, Biloxi experienced a record storm surge, destroying homes, businesses, and causing significant loss of life.

Local business owners, such as Bobby Mahoney, recall the harrowing experience of surviving the storm and emphasize the importance of not underestimating hurricanes. Many in the region now say they would evacuate if faced with a similar threat, underscoring the lasting lessons Katrina has imparted on the community.

Remembering Hurricane Katrina 20 years later

it was a day I'll never forget obviously the people that live here will never forget that as well New Orleans as you mentioned, I mean that grabs all the headlines that was the most devastation is that it's America's costliest natural disaster in our history. But it was here in new in in block C and Mississippi where the record shattering storm surge occur and made landfall right on the border and all that water pushed up in the Gulf 28 feet high something we never thought we'd see and it took out the lower levels of some of these hotels and casinos wiped out homes across parts of Biloxi and killed 238 people so devastating devastating impact here in Mississippi. And yesterday I caught up with the local business owner and and friend that I've known for for a long long time. He rode out the storm in his in his restaurant fled to the second floor, the waves of the Gulf coming through crashing through the windows cutting him up eventually got sent to the hospital, but he and his family survived in their business is back on track and going strong as the institution that it is. Here's a small part of the conversation that we had yesterday. What are some of the big lessons that you and Biloxi Mississippi. I don't have a domestic underestimate hurricanes, you know, and I think that's a that's the thing for anybody around water where hurricanes come in, you know, whatever you think of if a hot water hurricane can get close to you it can. That's Bobby Mahoney he's an institution here and he wrote out hurricane Camille as well, but he said if another big storm gets in the Gulf of Mexico and threatens this area, he's not sticking around he's he's leaving and that's something that we hear echoed throughout the region since hurricane Katrina.
