Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation across the Central Gulf Coast, with its most severe impact felt in New Orleans. The hurricane made landfall in southeast Florida before intensifying and striking the Gulf Coast, resulting in extreme winds and heavy rainfall. The storm's passage just east of New Orleans led to the failure of levees, causing the city to flood for weeks.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, Katrina was one of the most expensive natural disasters in recent U.S. history, with total economic damages estimated at $320 billion. The combination of weather and engineering failures contributed to the scale of destruction and the long-term recovery challenges faced by affected communities.

Reflecting on the total economic damage of Hurricane Katrina

We're going to take a look back at Katrina, and Katrina is certainly remembered primarily because of its impact in New Orleans and the Central Gulf Coast storm, but it also made a hurricane landfall in Dade County, Florida here, and you can see there was very rough surf up and down the coast. We had a large area of southeast Florida with gusts of wind between 50 and 92 miles per hour, and this brought significant impacts to southeast Florida as well, but by far the greatest impact of this true disaster ramped up as this became a major hurricane in the Gulf and tore into the Central Gulf Coast. There was tremendous devastation among areas of the Central Gulf Coast, but because the center of the storm passed just east of New Orleans, it put the extreme western eyewall, extreme winds, the north to south winds, right across Lake Pontchartrain, and that imparted a tremendous push of that lake water, of Lake Pontchartrain, right up against the levees, and it became not just a weather disaster, but a true engineering disaster here, and we've heard from some who have some, again, horrible experiences here from this storm all week long, but that western eyewall brought a tremendous north to south wind right over Lake Pontchartrain, so again, the levees failed, and the city filled up with water for weeks and weeks. Just to the east, we had tremendous rainfall, there were 10 to 15 inches of rain that fell just near Slidell and points northeast, so this became a tremendously expensive storm. Now, the human life toll was just extensive, horrible, but this also, when it comes to the billion dollar loss, it was a $320 billion disaster, and again, in the modern era, by far the worst hurricane in recent U.S. history.
