Thousands of students across NSW have begun their HSC exams, with this year’s cohort the largest on record. The exams span 123 subjects, and the oldest student is 67.

A record number of students in New South Wales have commenced their Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams, with nearly 75,000 candidates sitting the first written exam, English Paper 1. The cohort includes students who began high school during the pandemic, highlighting their resilience in overcoming educational disruptions.

The exams span 17 days and cover 123 different subjects, with mathematics remaining the most popular elective. The age range of participants is notable, with the oldest student aged 67 and the youngest just 12. The marking process will involve 7,500 markers, and results are scheduled for release after all exams are completed.

I was nervous going into it but when I saw the questions I was like, it won't be that bad. The class of 25, the biggest yet to tackle the HSC. These are the students who began year 7 wearing masks in the pandemic. These are amazing students. To come from a period of isolation I guess from education to completing a HSC is remarkable. Doonside Technology High students among nearly 75,000 sitting the first written exam today, English Paper 1. Across 17 days there will be 400,000 exam sessions on 123 different subjects. PDHPE is very popular amongst students these days, biology maintains its popularity, modern history is still a popular subject, business studies has been increasing in popularity. The most popular elective subject remains maths. Also with record numbers sitting HSC exams, Sydney Catholic Schools. As you walk into those exams it's only natural to feel that bubble of anxiety, that's a good thing, use it. Life is a team sport and this is really one where our students are certainly the ones that are sitting the exams today but we know that parents and families have ridden this journey with them along with their teachers. And proving you're never too young or too old, the oldest student this year is 67, the youngest just 12. Exams finish on November 7 and that's when 7,500 markers get to work.
