FOX 5 NY's political reporter Morgan McKay takes a closer look at the race for Brooklyn Borough President.

The Brooklyn borough president race features incumbent Antonio Reynoso, who is seeking a second term, and Republican challenger Janine Aqua Freda. Reynoso, the first Latino to hold the office in Brooklyn, emphasizes his achievements in land use planning and maternal health care funding, while Aqua Freda, a real estate professional, is the first Republican candidate to qualify for public matching funds in this race.

Both candidates have outlined housing affordability and public safety as central campaign issues. Reynoso aims to complete the Inner Borough Express rail line and expand housing through partnerships with local churches, while Aqua Freda focuses on increasing housing, supporting small businesses, and promoting public safety.

Race for Brooklyn Borough President

It's not just the mayor on the ballot in the city, that's right. There are also borough president races in all five boroughs, including in Brooklyn. Fox eyes. Morgan McKay is here with a closer look at that particular race. Morgan. Hey, Steven Natasha. So in the Brooklyn borough president race, Antonio Renoso, he's running for reelection this year and he's being challenged by Republican candidate Janine aqua Freda. We spoke with both of the candidates. Reynoso is seeking another four years as borough president and just won his primary in june in 2021. Reynoso was the youngest borough president elected to a four year term and the first latino to hold that office in Brooklyn. Reynoso tells us that the projects he's most proud of over the last four years has been his comprehensive plan for land use and allocating $45 million to maternal health care improvements at Brooklyn public hospitals. Aqua Freda jumped into the race in april. Her campaign tells us that she is the first republican borough president candidates to qualify for public matching funds, which she received yesterday. Aqua Freda says she has spent over 20 years in real estate in Brooklyn and has seen firsthand how new yorkers are being priced out of their neighborhoods. Here are both candidates on why they're in the race. I am from the projects actually born and raised in new york city housing. I am the first in my family to graduate college, own a home and own a business. What prompted me to jump into this race was our housing situation and the mess that our local elected officials have made with the housing situation. I, my background is in real estate. I've spent over 20 years in real estate in Brooklyn. I understand what we need. I also understand ways that we can get to a situation where things are better. I was born and raised in the south side of Williamsburg in the nineties. So there are 200 murders a year in the 90th precinct when I was born and raised there. When government shows up for people, people will show them that they're grateful and that these the american dream is real. So I've been looking to pay it forward ever since I became borough president because I want to get broken and everything it gave me. Now, aqua Freda says what she doesn't have in political experience she makes up for with business experience. She says her three top goals are to increase housing, promote public safety and find new ways to make the city more affordable. Right now. So served on the city council before being elected to borough president in 2021. He says if reelected, he's going to be focused on finishing the inner borough express rail line that will connect brooklyn and queens and says he wants to work with churches to use some of the property they own to create housing. The first four years we're just laying the groundwork. We've really been focused on doing service work and less celebratory work in borough hall. So I want to always be known in the future as the borough president that turned the office around from a cheerleading and celebratory office into one that did good by the people that needed the most help. I want to see police on the beat. I want people to feel safe. I want to be very um preventive with crime. I want to um show our small businesses that they mean something to us and show them the support that they deserve. And I definitely want to start talking serious talk about our housing affordability crisis. I really want to get people to listen to some out of the box thinking aqua Freda says she voted on the first day of early voting and Reynoso says he's going to vote on election day. Steven Natasha.
