A mother and child fled their home in Melbourne's inner south east after their car, decorated for Hanukkah, was firebombed in what officials described as an apparent act of anti-Semitism. The home belongs to a prominent Jewish rabbi who is currently overseas, and the incident has left the victims shaken and the community alarmed.

Community leaders report this is the twelfth firebombing targeting Jews in Australia and have urged immediate action from federal and state governments. Police have identified a person who may assist with the investigation and believe the incident to be isolated, but concerns about safety persist among the local Jewish community.

It is again another wake-up call to our leaders today to do more. Any action that is being brought from the federal and state governments needs to be brought forward immediately. Leaders fear their words and those of the community are falling on deaf ears. I know there's been a lot of talk over the past two weeks about it, but now we need it to be implemented. Despicable fringe element that is still continuing to attack Jews. Balaclava sits within one of Australia's largest Jewish communities, already living with heightened security, including patrols, which had been increased in recent weeks. Police say they identified a person who may be able to assist with their investigation and it's believed to be an isolated incident. Reckon with the reality that Jews do not feel safe.
