A quick-hitting winter storm is affecting the Mid-Atlantic region, with winter alerts issued from Richmond to Roanoke, parts of Kentucky, and North Carolina. Most areas are expected to receive a few inches of snow, but mountainous regions in Virginia and West Virginia could see accumulations of half a foot or more.

Snowfall is expected to increase by late morning, with general totals ranging from 2 to 4 inches and localized pockets reaching 5 to 8 inches. The snow may extend eastward to the I-95 corridor, potentially impacting traffic from Richmond to Roanoke Rapids and possibly bringing flakes to Norfolk during the afternoon commute.

Here's a look at the winter alerts that are painting the picture of blue here, basically for us from Richmond to Roanoke, back into parts of Kentucky, even into North Carolina. We've got the alerts and some of that moisture coming in this early morning. How much will we get? Several of us will just get a few inches here, a few inches there. But there's a couple pockets in the more mountainous terrain of Virginia and West Virginia that have a chance to maybe pick up a half a foot or more. So more blue expected by late morning, which means more cold air moving in, more snow hitting the surface. And a lot of you actually tapping into some of the snowfall accumulations of two to four inches, maybe five to eight in some of those pockets that I highlighted. And let's see how far east this gets. Okay, the I-95 corridor, could you guys see snow this morning? All right, could it linger till midday into the afternoon? That could maybe be a problem cuz it gets very traffic highway there, Richmond all the way into Roanoke Rapids going down in North Carolina. And notice Norfolk, Virginia, could it continue to push the mild air out into the Atlantic to allow us to see some flakes for the second half of your commute down there in Norfolk?
