Despite the intensity of the storm, which caused some damage to trees and shook buildings, there were no reports of serious structural damage. The majority of the heavy rain and wild weather is now moving south, and local residents are preparing for further events in the coming days.

Last night, wind gusts of 170 kilometres an hour tore through the town. The last time winds of that speed were recorded in the region was 23 years ago. The storm struck just a day after the biggest social event of the year, the Birdsville races, and hundreds of tourists, many of them camping, were forced to ride the wild weather out. Here is what some locals had to say. We didn't expect the ferocity of the winds. It was shaking, like I thought the roof was going to come off and the walls were shaking. I couldn't hear TV, I was making dinner. We learned not to worry too much about the weather because what's forecast next week may eventuate, it may not. There was damage to some trees but no serious structural damage, which is good news considering there are more events ahead this weekend.
