It's been described as one of the biggest cigarette, tobacco and vape seizures ever recorded. Queensland police and border force have carried out a joint operation to cripple two major crime syndicates targeting Australia.

Queensland authorities have conducted a large-scale operation resulting in the seizure of more than 30 million illegally imported cigarettes, 400,000 illegal vapes, and 4.6 tonnes of loose leaf tobacco. The raids, carried out by the Australian Border Force and Queensland Police, targeted 17 storage units and several businesses across Greater Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The operation disrupted two major illicit tobacco smuggling networks, believed to be linked to organised crime. The crackdown was initiated after a tip-off from the public and is being described as one of the most significant seizures in Queensland's law enforcement history. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates involved in the illegal tobacco trade.

It's often said authorities barely scratch the surface of the criminal tobacco and vape imports which aren't seized by authorities. But the sheer quantities from this operation suggest it may have opened up a nasty wound. Australian Border Force officers have seized more than 30 million cigarettes, 400,000 illegal vapes and 4.6 tonne of loose leaf tobacco. A separate but coordinated operation targeted an alleged safehouse and storage sheds at Tellai and Carrara on the Gold Coast hinterlands. Several businesses were also hit. The criminal syndicate targeted was known to operate a large number of tobacco shops around the country selling illicit tobacco and vapes, the profits of which were suspected to be funnelled back into organised crime. There was a single call from the public about unusual activity at a storage unit that triggered this entire operation, described as one of the biggest and most successful seizures in Queensland law enforcement history. Our message is clear, the Australian Border Force and our partner agencies are committed to not only disrupting but dismantling these criminal syndicates from operating in Australia.
