Leaders from Russia, India, and China convened at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China, joined by over 20 leaders from Asia and Europe. The summit focused on enhancing security and economic ties among member states, with China positioning itself as an alternative to Western influence. 

A joint statement from participating countries expressed opposition to trade measures violating World Trade Organization rules and highlighted concerns about disruptions to global supply chains. President Xi Jinping announced new investment proposals, including $280 million in grant aid and the establishment of a bank to support security and economic cooperation. While the summit aimed to show substantive progress, differences among SCO members remain.

Leaders of three of the world's most powerful countries have been meeting in China. President Xi Jinping has been hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit. More than 20 leaders from Asia and European countries being hosted in China, where the largest gathering of the SCO focused on boosting security and economic ties. It's also a chance for China to position itself as an alternative to US and Western influence. And this just coming in. The countries participating in the SCO have released a statement saying that they are opposed to trade measures that would violate rules and principles of the World Trade Organization. The countries are concerned about any deals that would disrupt the global supply chain. Patrick Fock has more from Hong Kong. Well in his opening address today, President Xi talked about how the SCO practiced genuine multilateralism and noted that it had deepened cooperation with the United Nations. That can be seen as a direct swipe at the US. Beijing has repeatedly accused Washington of practicing hegemonism. Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin in his address talked about the need for a new security system to replace what he described as an outdated Eurocentral and Euro-Atlantic model and he said that it needed to be more inclusive and include the maximum number of nations possible and for it to be more balanced. There's no doubt about it. China and Russia's agenda here is to shake up the Western-led global order at a time when the US is increasingly taking a unilateral approach to trade and foreign policy in particular. But the big question is whether or not there can be substance behind this summit. Critics have argued that there has been more symbolism than anything else in the past. President Xi addressed some of that today. He announced a series of investment proposals and said that he would be putting forward $280 million in grant aid to SCO member states and he would also be establishing what he described as 100 small and beautiful projects across member states as well and establishing a bank for the purposes of enhancing security and economic cooperation between members also. So to an extent he has addressed that issue. There are still many differences and challenges between the members of the SCO but certainly it can be seen as more than just power optics and a photo opportunity for its members.
