Putin breaks silence on Prigozhin after jet crash

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday made his first remarks about the plane crash that purportedly killed mercenary boss Evgeny Prigozhin a day earlier. Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner private militia, was listed as a passenger on a private jet that fell from the sky north of Moscow, killing all 10 on board. He was also a powerful figure who criticized Russia's conduct of its war in Ukraine and, just two months earlier, led an astonishing, if brief, challenge to Putin. The president on Thursday expressed his condolences to Prigozhin's family. He said he'd known Prigozhin since the 1990s, called him a talented businessman, and said he looked forward to seeing whatever investigators learned from the wreckage. The cause of the crash is unknown. Two U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters on Thursday the plane may have been shot down by a surface-to-air missile fired inside Russia, but the Pentagon later dismissed that notion. We don't have any information to indicate right now. The press reporting stating that there was some type of surface-to-air missile that took down the plane, we assess that information to be inaccurate. Prigozhin's death comes after the mercenary boss led fighters from his Wagner private militia to seize control of the Russian city of Rostov and drive north toward Moscow before turning back. Obviously, Mr. Prigozhin had become quite a critic of the operation, what they call special military operation in Ukraine. Andrew Boreen is the executive director of the threat intelligence firm Flashpoint. If it turns out that it was shot down by Russian air defenses, I think it's going to, I think it will have, in that case, if all those facts are true, be pretty clear that this was retribution for the events of that march on Moscow and the criticism of war. No evidence has emerged to support the widespread belief that Prigozhin was killed as an act of vengeance for staging the mutiny.
