Protests in Jakarta have seen a notable decline in turnout, with only small crowds gathering outside parliament compared to previous days. Similar reductions in protest size have been observed in other Indonesian cities. The decrease follows President Prabowo Subianto's announcement to revoke certain policies, including those related to politicians' allowances, which had been a source of public anger. Authorities have maintained a strong police and military presence, and the president has reiterated his respect for peaceful demonstrations within the bounds of the law. Some groups have indicated plans to continue demonstrating in the coming days.

Protests shrink in Jakarta as government announces concessions

After many schools, offices and businesses closed for the day here in Jakarta, in anticipation of mass unrest across the city, only a small crowd is gathered here outside the parliament, certainly much smaller than what we've seen in the days past. Across the country there are some demonstrations in other cities as well, in Bandung, in Yogyakarta, but again on a much smaller scale than what we have seen in these past few days. We condemn the repressive actions of the police and demand that the police chief resign. There is a strong police and military presence on the streets. The turnout of this protest outside the parliament is much smaller compared to previous demonstrations which had sometimes escalated into violence. The reduced turnout comes after Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called on the military and police to act firmly against anyone violating the law. He also agreed to revoke some of the policies that had sparked public anger, including the size of allowances for politicians. And on Monday he reiterated that he respects the right of people to demonstrate peacefully. The right to express opinions is guaranteed by law, but there are conditions. Demonstrations must be peaceful and in accordance with the law. Some groups in Jakarta say they still plan to carry out demonstrations in the coming days. Jessica Washington, Al Jazeera, Jakarta.
