A beloved doctor and his family were murdered in their California home. A manhunt led to the arrest of a suspect investigators say was a career con man. "48 Hours" correspondent Natalie Morales reports.

A 2016 triple homicide in Santa Barbara, California, involving Dr. Henry Hahn, his wife Jenny, and their young daughter Emily, is the focus of a recent investigation. Authorities arrested Pierre Hopsch, who was found with weapons, personal belongings of the victims, and documents linking him to Dr. Hahn.

Prosecutors argued that Hopsch was a career con man who killed the family to access Dr. Hahn's bank accounts, dismissing Hopsch's claims of being targeted by shadowy figures over a supposed energy invention. Investigators and even Hopsch's own defense attorney found no evidence supporting his elaborate story.

This weekend's 48 Hours investigates the 2016 murder of a California family. It was a beloved doctor, his wife, and their young daughter. They were all found dead at their Santa Barbara home. Now, a manhunt led to the arrest of a suspect who told a story that people say is fit for a movie plot, filled with lies, deception, and a whole lot of danger. 48 Hours correspondent Natalie Morales has the details. Mark and Marla Palumbo had a bad feeling when their friend and business partner, Dr. Henry Hahn, failed to show up for a meeting the morning of March 23, 2016. We're trying to call Henry, and it was going straight to voicemail. Something was not right. Santa Barbara Sheriff's deputies discovered Dr. Hahn, his wife, Jenny, and their daughter, Emily, murdered three days shy of her sixth birthday. Prosecutor Ben Ledinig says they had been shot while they slept. Jenny's room was tough to see. Mom probably read her stories to have Emily go to sleep that night and was sleeping with her. Detectives found a document in Dr. Hahn's bedroom signed the last day of his life that led them to a person of interest. It's basically a four-page business contract between two partners, partner one, Pierre Hopsch, and partner two, Dr. Hahn. Investigators arrested 26-year-old Pierre Hopsch almost 200 miles away at a gas station near Oceanside, armed with weapons, his passport, go bags, and items belonging to the victims. You name it, we found it in that car. Hopsch talked to detectives and told them he had invented a revolutionary energy device that made him the target of shadowy figures who had killed the Hahn family and tried to kill him. Over the past couple of days, I kid you not, I've been shot at. There's only about five individuals so far that I shot in self-defense. It was this massive conspiracy to keep this next-level energy system from getting out to market. James Bond, Mission Impossible, this fantastical life. At Hopsch's trial, LeDinig was set out to prove he was a career conman who killed the family so he could drain the doctor's bank accounts. You called him a lying liar who lies about lying. Hundreds of lies were found on him. His life was a con. Well, Natalie Morales joins us now. Natalie, a lying liar who lies about lies. So was there any evidence that supported his kind of really bizarre story about shootouts and then shadowy figures? Yeah, no, there was absolutely no evidence. In fact, you know, his defense attorney even told me that she found it hard to embrace his testimony. That said, you know, this, according to prosecutors, was a young man who many believed was a career conman as the prosecutor made the case in court.
