A new bill proposed in the Utah legislature would prohibit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from entering sensitive locations such as churches and hospitals. The legislation, introduced by State Senator Nate Bluen, also seeks to prevent state and local police from collaborating with ICE in these areas and would ban federal agents from wearing face coverings.

Senator Bluen stated that the bill was in development prior to recent public clashes involving immigration enforcement and aims to address concerns about community safety and lack of coordination with local law enforcement. While Bluen acknowledged the bill may not advance, he hopes it will prompt discussion among Utah residents and lawmakers as the legislative session begins.

Despite the announcement from the Trump administration saying there are no plans to increase ice presence here in Utah Some lawmakers in the state are not waiting to take action Fox 13's Tina Giuliano is live with what one Utah lawmaker is now proposing Tina Hey, good morning guys, so in the Capitol right now in the in the new legislative session There's a bill that's being proposed that will Not allow ice to be in certain sensitive areas like churches or hospitals So this is proposed by state senator Nate Bolin and he said that this bill was already in the works for months before any of the recent clashes between any immigration enforcement agents and the public and so in addition to Restricting where I've ice officers can go the measure would prohibit state and local police from working with ice around those sensitive areas it would also ban federal agents from wearing face coverings and Bluen told Fox 13 that he believes that ice agents are making our communities less safe I have not seen many folks who feel like they are actually being made safer by the lack of collaboration the lack of Communication that's happening between these agents, you know in many cases they're overwhelming local law enforcement They're coming into operations without the knowledge of the folks on the ground who actually know the communities And I think that's really dangerous and that is something I want to stop seeing So Bluen says that he admits that there might not this bill might not even get a hearing But he hopes that it opens up a conversation between Utahns and their lawmakers and he hopes that people reach out to their state senators and representatives and other lawmakers to really open up this Conversation and figure this out.
